Nitro Extra maintenance

by Vince
(Ontario, Canada)

I found that by buying your common plastic/nylon clutch shoes and standard non vented clutch bells, the clutch shoes, and spur gear(s) melt from the heat the clutch gives off. I have found buying aluminum clutch shoes and a vented clutch bell gives the best result.

I've been using the same set of alum. clutch shoes for over 5 gallons of fuel and have experienced no slipping from the shoes. They are getting there, but not yet. Just a simple thought next time you buy some :), spending that extra 2 dollars for metal ones might not be such a bad idea.

Vented Clutch
by: Vince

Also thought I'd mention, the most common vehicle I've seen with a vented clutch is the Savage series. I've gone through a ton of combinations and an 18t Vented Clutch, with a 52T Spur i believe, maybe it was 49, either way, as long as its a 18t vented on the savage, you will get performance you didn't know you had. For some reason the savage is really bad for melting clutches with a non vented bell.

Clutch shoes alum/plastic weights.
by: Anonymous

Hey, thanks for the interesting Question. I was able to find a weight for the aluminum clutch shoes, but not the plastic ones (odd). When I get out the the hobbyshop, I'll have them weigh some, or ask them if they know.

But, to answer a little bit of your question, I have actually only done this on a 4 shoe setup, which doesn't cause any vibration because you have equal opposites.

example:

Aluminum
Plastic Plastic
Aluminum

I have heard it still works in a 3 shoe setup, but you have raised a very interesting point, in which the weight of each shoe would give you the answer. If in fact they do weigh the same, then it wouldn't matter at all which shoe you chose to mix (ie 2 metals, 1 plastic, or 1 metal 2 plastic, etc).

As for the 4 shoe setup, the weight won't be an issue, as pointed above, the forces will pull up and down for the aluminum ones when its vertical, and side to side when its horizontal, as long as the 2 vertical or the 2 horizontals are the same type of shoe, the weight won't affect it. If anything, just use the same springs to help get the same spring rate. I didn't do that before, but I didn't have any issues, so it must've been either the same type of spring, or a very similar one.

And lastly, the weight I found of an aluminum shoe was 1.7 grams. I have no idea if its accurate, it was pulled off google. I'll be sure to ask the hobby shop when I go sometime next week though!

Thanks Again
Vince

do the alluminium clutch shoes weigh the same.if not the you are going to get alot of shake on 3 & 2 shoe systems.this is a genuine question because if they do its a fantastic compromise.

While I do agree that you are moving a lot of air, you are keeping your clutch shoes cooler. The best combination i've found, on a 4 shoe clutch system is 2 aluminum, and 2 plastic, opposite eachother. On a 3 shoe clutch, it was 2 aluminum, 1 plastic, and on a 2 shoe clutch, it was 1 each. By combining metal and plastic, you are getting the longevity of the alum. shoes, and the stick of the plastic ones, without too much wear, or loss of stick.

vented pinion bell

I agree with what your saying, but a vented pinion bell has an afect on preformance.Ie at 30000 rpm your moveing a lot of air with a vented bell its better to replace your shoes after 4/5 hours of full stick stuff. Its worth a thought.
