A Beginner's Guide to Choosing and Buying
Gas Powered Remote Controlled Cars and Trucks
Gas powered remote control cars are powered by nitro fuel and are available in many different styles including offroad trucks, buggies, and onroad sedans. They are usually available in 1/10th and 1/8th size scales but often come in many other varieties.
If you are new to the hobby, I highly recommend a ready to run version.
You can get them in both ready to run and build it yourself kits. The build it yourself kits allow you to start building your racer from the ground up. The ready to run kits come with almost everything you need to get started. You usually only just need to add the nitro fuel and a starter kit consisting of a glow ignitor, fuel bottle, and maybe a wrench or two if you're lucky.
Let's clear something up from the start. Almost all "gas powered rc cars" actually use a type of glow fuel powered by nitromethane gas and is commonly referred to as nitro fuel. And that's why we commonly refers to gas powered remote control cars as nitro rc cars. The nitro usually makes up around 20 - 30% of the content of the fuel.
The glow starter is used to ignite the glow fuel. You place it in the recess of the engine head where the glow plug is located to heat it up while starting the engine. The heat at the plug allows the fuel to ignite and start the engine.
You will also of course need a bottle to hold your nitro fuel. The bottles usually come with the starter kit and hold anywhere from 250cc to 750cc of fuel. That's enough for several tanks of gas and plenty of weekend fun.
The ready to run kits are great for beginners because they are already put together for you and you can get up and running much more quickly. Building the kit yourself is also fun, but it takes more time and patience. If you're new to the hobby, I highly recommend a ready to run version. With a ready to run kit you can still take it apart and rebuild it at your leisure. That way you get the best of both worlds. :-)
